Star Light, Star Dark QAL: Fabric Choices

When I saw the finished top Jessica at Quilty Habit made when she announced the Star Light, Star Dark Quilt-A-Long, I immediately knew I wanted to participate.  Besides the beautiful colors and the challenge of playing with lights and darks, I love both the sawtooth and friendship star blocks included in the pattern.

I showed my stack of fabrics in my post for 2016 Mid Year Review and shared that one of my goals for 2016 was to make a Quilt of Valor.

The recipient I have in mind is a retired US Air Force colonel and I have heard him speak of one of his missions, Operation Spring High, when he flew a Republic F105-Thunderbolt.

I can only imagine the colors of sky as seen from a fighter jet from the whites, blues and grays to pinks and purples to yellows and oranges.  So that's the inspiration for my fabrics.

Some of my fabrics are only scraps, so I may have add some additional fabrics if my pieces are not large enough.

I will have to adjust the size a bit.  Jessica's quilt finishes at 51" x 70.  The minimum size for a Quilt of Valor is 55" x 65".  I'm ok lengthwise, but I will need to increase the size of the stars a bit or maybe add an additional strip to each block to increase the width.

Jess has given the layout and cutting instructions here and you can link up your fabric choices here through August 1st.

I'm linking to the Star Light, Star Dark fabric link up, Sunday Stash and Main Crush Monday.

  6. You have a great idea to add strips where needed (or make the stars a bit bigger) - either way, it's going to look so beautiful! So much effort and detail went into choosing your color scheme. I can't wait to see more. :)

  7. What a great way to combine your desire to join the quilt along and to make a quilt of valor! Your fabrics are wonderful, and I'm sure the Colonel will love it. It's a great pattern and looks like it will go together fast. The stars are perfect for a quilt of valor.
