Fandangle Fabric Blog Hop ➕ Giveaway

I was so honored when Christa Watson of Christa Quilts asked me to take part in the blog hop for her latest fabric line, Fandangle, from Benartex and Contempo Studio.

How could you not love lime green paired with turquoise and teal.  I thought the Beaded Curtain low volume white and aqua would be the perfect background for Crosshatch Crosshatch in teal.

Since I love machine applique, I decided to use the Cute as a Button applique pattern from Modern Plus Sign Quilts and made a mini quilt to hang in my sewing room.  And so you'll know, Aurifil 4182 in dark turquoise matched the Confetti Crosshatch in teal perfectly.

Beaded Curtain is one of my favorites from Christa's Fandangle fabric.

I'm also very fond of the Confetti Crosshatch.  Pictured here is the teal used in the Cute as a Button applique and light grey Confetti Crosshatch, but it also comes in a dark gray.

The fun triangle prints are Triangle Trinkets and are pictured here with the Confetti Crosshatch.

You can see the scale of the print compared to the large spool of Aurifil.

I used the same Confetti Crosshatch in teal for the bias binding and the Triangle Trinkets in teal as the backing.

For the quilting, I attempted something similar to what Christa calls a 'jagged stipple'.  See her Fandangle introductory post with mention of jagged stipple.

I outlined the applique by quilting close to the applique on inside of the plus signs and around the outside of the circles.

Speaking of jagged stipple, the Paper Cuts print was inspired from Christa's jagged stipple quilting.  And here also is the main print, Baubles and Bits.  I just love the mid-century modern vibe going on in this print.

How fun to see Christ's name in print on the selvage of the the Baubles and Bits.

Continuing the theme of the main print is Sparkling Squares.

And, here are a couple more photos of the mini I'm calling Fandangle Button Plus.

Fandangle Button Plus looks a little lost on the large brick wall.

I've only showed you the cool colorway, but Fandangle also comes in warm colors too.

Here are all the prints together taken from the Benartex lookbook.

You haven't seen the last of Fandangle around here because, I'll be making another version of the Modern Plus Sampler from Fandangle, compliments of Benartex.

The Modern Plus Sampler Quilt Along is free and is just getting started so it's the perfect time to join in on the fun.  The first set of sewing instructions will be given out on August 2nd.  You'll need the book, Modern Plus Sign Quilts, to sew along.  You'll find a link here on where to purchase.  The fabric requirements are here

Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop ➕ It's a Wrap ➕ Thank You

I can't believe the Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop is coming to a close!  It's been such a fun two weeks sharing the quilts from the book.  This stack of quilts represents almost 3 years of work between us.  Well, there are few missing, but that's still a lot of quilts.

➕ Thank You ➕

There are so many of you to thank, I don't even know where to begin!

BLOGGERS

The blog hop would not be possible without you, the bloggers, that made all the beautiful versions of the quilts from the  book.  Thank you for spending your valuable time and resources to contribute to hop.  Cheryl and I appreciate your efforts more than you know.  You all are so talented, thank you!

Here are all the quilts from the book in one mosaic (not in any particular order) and below is each quilt and a link to the bloggers who made a project.  Each blogger was given the freedom to change it up in any way and they were so creative.

Sandra @ mmm! Quilts
Karen @ Run Sew Fun

This picture is of the handwritten quilt labels for each quilt photographed on the back Rick Rack Runner  Don't you just love the binding with the little plus signs.  You can tell from the dates, many of the quilts were finished in December 2016.  My tutorial for handwritten quilt labels is here.

RESOURCES

As many of you know, new authors are not given an advance on royalties so it was greatly appreciated to receive beautiful fabrics and supplies for all of the projects.  It was such a joy to 'shop' for fabric and supplies and have it land on your doorstep.

Due to constraints we were not able to provide a resource page to the various manufactures and supplies,  so I want to acknowledge you here (and hope I'm not leaving anyone out).

FABRIC

Fabrics used in the projects throughout the book were generously provided by the following:

Andover Fabrics

Backside Fabrics

Birch Fabrics

Cloud9 Fabrics

Hoffman California Fabrics

Michael Miller Fabrics

Moda Fabrics

RJR Fabrics and Cotton and Steel Fabrics

Robert Kaufman Fabrics

SUPPLIES

The best supplies can make all the difference in a project and were generously provided by the following:

AccuQuilt Go! provided the Fabric Cutter (55100S) and Go! Orange Peel-4 1/2" die (55455).

Aurifil provided Cotton 50wt for applique, piecing and quilting.  Aurifil also sponsored the giveaways during the blog hop this week by providing the beautiful thread collections.

These are the lovey colors used on Cute as a Button for the applique.

C&T Publishing provided Carol Doak's Foundation Paper for paper piecing.

Sulky of America provided Totally Stable iron-on tear-away stabilizer used in fusible machine applique.

The Warm Company provided Warm & White batting for all projects in the book.

INDUSTRY AND QUILTING FRIENDS

BERNINA Sewing Center - We're in Stitches (Greenville, SC)  Owner, Leslie White, generously supported us throughout the book-writing efforts.

Johellen George, who beautifully quilted several quilts in the book.

Darlene Sanford for pattern testing and reviewing.

The 122 quilters across the US and UK (Kate, that's you) who contributed a Plus block for our signature quilt, Signature Plus.

Signature Plus photographed by C&T Plublishing

Many thanks to Stash Books for bringing our vision to print.  They did such a beautiful job on the layout and photography, we are so pleased.

Look how they used little plus signs for the difficulty rating of each project.  Aren't they cute?  We assigned each quilt a ➕, ➕➕, or ➕➕➕ rating.

And, they even put my favorite color in the inside front cover with more little plus signs.

And last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank Cheryl (Meadow Mist Designs) for inviting me to join her on the incredible book-writing adventure.  She's all smiles here because it's shipping day.  We shipped off all the quilts to C&T for photography.  This was taken on February 13, 2017.

So once again, thank you everyone for a successful hop!

For the giveaway today, Make Modern is generously offering a 6-month subscription to Make Modern Magazine.

Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop + Day 9

On Day 9 of the Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop we look at the two last, but not least, quilts from the book, Bear Claw Plus and Intertwined.   The giveaway today is a 10 small spool thread collection by Tula Pink.

Bear Claw Plus

I just love this modern take on the traditional bear claw block designed by Cheryl.  I was excited to piece this one and picked out an Elizabeth Hartman print from Rhoda Ruth in Petal and paired it with Kona Cotton in White by Robert Kaufman for high contrast.
I'm rather fond of the secondary pattern formed when the blocks are joined together.  It's such a pretty star.  And, when piecing, most of the points were kept in tact.

From some of the photos I've seen on Instagram, many of you are not experiencing a lovely spring right now, but maybe this photo taken by C&T last spring will take you there.  Bear Claw Plus is so pretty sitting on the fence.

And just look at a close up of the quilting done by Johellen George.  I thought Bear Claw Plus deserved more than an allover pattern.  So, we discussed combining some ruler work with free motion quilting including pebbles, swirls and uneven parallel lines.  I couldn't be more pleased.

Head on over and see the versions of Bear Claw Plus made by Janice and Joanne...

Intertwined

Plus signs interacting with the background makes this a fun design.  Cheryl designed Intertwined and was originally going to make this one.

That is, until the fabric, Grafic by Latifah Saafir for Hoffman Fabrics, arrived at my house and I wouldn't let her have it!

Here I arranged and rearranged the fabric until I had the layout I liked trying to disperse the colors and prints evenly.

For the quilting, I went to Johellen's house and got to use her Innova longarm for the first time.  I quilting angled lines trying to emulate overhead electrical wires like in the fabric.

This is one of my favorite shots from the book and appears on the back cover.

Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop + Day 8

Today is Day 8 of the Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop and we are featuring two more quilts, Celestial and Pinwheel Plus.  And...the giveaway today is 2 charm packs by Free Spirit.

Celestial

Celestial is the the largest quilt in the book finishing at 96" x 96". The blocks are big and the quilt comes together easily with a difficulty rating of just one + sign.
This is such a large quilt, the quilting was handed off to Johellen George @sc_quilter which she did on her longarm. The background fabric is Indigo, a Cotton Supreme Solid by RJR Fabrics. The plus signs or 'stars' are various Cotton + Steel prints.

In fact, I used the many of the left over Cotton + Steel prints from Celestial to make the Candy Plus, the free pattern you will receive when you sign up for Cheryl's newsletter.

Head on over to see the Celestial versions made by Anja, Kate and Sue...

Kate @ Smiles From Kate

Sue @ Sevenoaks Street Quilts

Pinwheel Plus

This design is one you look at and ask yourself, "Now where is the block?".  Cheryl cleverly used pinwheels and plus signs together and it's pieced in rows rather than blocks.
A variety of pink and red prints were used along with Michael Miller Cotton Couture in Coin and Bright White.

Pinwheel Plus was quilted in a fun loopy design, again, by Johellen.

You will love the versions by Alison and Carole...

Carole @ From My Carolina Home

Be sure to enter the giveaway (it's over) for 2 charm packs (6") of Free Spirit Essentials in Soft Solids and Soft Prints.

Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop + Day 7

It's Day 7 of the Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop and today we highlighting Cute as a Button and Message in a Bottle.  And, get ready to enter, because today's giveaway is a 10 piece small spool collection of Alison Glass Seventy Six sponsored by Aurifil.

Cute as a Button

The 2nd applique pattern is Cute as a Button.  I had so much fun working on this one.

It didn't take long to decide what fabrics to use for Cute as a Button.  Who can resist the the color saturated fabrics of Alison Glass for Andover Fabrics.  The 'buttons' are cut from Sun Print 2015 and the background is Endpaper from Sun Print 2016.  I started with precut 10" squares.

I used matching Aurifil 50wt cotton for the applique.

Here's the applique in progress...

I'm deciding on the layout here and arranging all the colors.

This is after it's completed, but a close up of the applique...I chose to outline the buttons by quilting around and inside the buttons.

Message in a Bottle
Next up is Message in a Bottle, a larger than life outlined plus by Cheryl made from two Bonnie and Camille prints and Modern Background Paper all from Moda fabrics.  Message in a Bottle measures 48" x 48" making it a nice size baby quilt, perfect when you need a speedy baby quilt.

Here you can see the crosshatch quilting.  And, who can resist a stripped binding?
