Atypical Angles ~ July 2018 MQG Quilt of the Month

It's that time of the year, time for the fall 2018 edition of the Blogger's Quilt Festival hosted by Amy of Amy's Creative Side. Bloggers can share two quilts of their choosing by writing a separate blog post for each quilt and linking to the festival link party.

This is Atypical Angles which was the Modern Quilt Guild's July 2018 Quilt of the Month.


The isosceles triangle blocks were assembled log-cabin style using provided templates in two sizes.


I've labeled the skill level as challenging since the quilt top was pieced in diagonal rows which allows the triangles to be shifted to your liking.  Can you identify the diagonal rows?


Atypical Angles was all quilted on my Bernina 153 using the walking foot in parallel lines.  In the background, I used Aurifil cotton 40wt and inside the triangles Aurifil 50wt was used.  In the quilt stats below you will find the Aurifil weights and colors used for Atypical Angles. 


I changed the direction of the the quilting and varied the width of parallel lines in each section of the quilt for interest.


There was a lot of marking and quilt wrangling when quilting Atypical Angles.  Tying off and burying threads is not my favorite, so, many times, I traveled over previously quilted lines and turned the quilt back and forth where I could.  That way, one entire section could be quilted at a time without burying any threads.


I loved working with the Modern Batiks by Studio E Fabrics.  I was instantly drawn to the Pencil Dashes in Lime when I saw it in my local Bernina quilt shop.  The background Triangles in Light Gray.  The binding is Triangles in Peacock.

Here's another shot taken at the same industrial building.  I thought the roll-up door in three shades of gray was interesting but I ended up using the same painted wall shown in this post and this one.


I'm excited that Atypical Angles will be hanging at QuiltCon 2019 taking place in Nashville, TN.

Fandangle Fabric Blog Hop ➕ Giveaway

I was so honored when Christa Watson of Christa Quilts asked me to take part in the blog hop for her latest fabric line, Fandangle, from Benartex and Contempo Studio.

How could you not love lime green paired with turquoise and teal.  I thought the Beaded Curtain low volume white and aqua would be the perfect background for Crosshatch Crosshatch in teal.


Since I love machine applique, I decided to use the Cute as a Button applique pattern from Modern Plus Sign Quilts and made a mini quilt to hang in my sewing room.  And so you'll know, Aurifil 4182 in dark turquoise matched the Confetti Crosshatch in teal perfectly.


Beaded Curtain is one of my favorites from Christa's Fandangle fabric.


I'm also very fond of the Confetti Crosshatch.  Pictured here is the teal used in the Cute as a Button applique and light grey Confetti Crosshatch, but it also comes in a dark gray.


The fun triangle prints are Triangle Trinkets and are pictured here with the Confetti Crosshatch.


You can see the scale of the print compared to the large spool of Aurifil.


I used the same Confetti Crosshatch in teal for the bias binding and the Triangle Trinkets in teal as the backing.


For the quilting, I attempted something similar to what Christa calls a 'jagged stipple'.  See her Fandangle introductory post with mention of jagged stipple.




I outlined the applique by quilting close to the applique on inside of the plus signs and around the outside of the circles.


Speaking of jagged stipple, the Paper Cuts print was inspired from Christa's jagged stipple quilting.  And here also is the main print, Baubles and Bits.  I just love the mid-century modern vibe going on in this print.

   
How fun to see Christ's name in print on the selvage of the the Baubles and Bits.


Continuing the theme of the main print is Sparkling Squares.


And, here are a couple more photos of the mini I'm calling Fandangle Button Plus.



Fandangle Button Plus looks a little lost on the large brick wall.


I've only showed you the cool colorway, but Fandangle also comes in warm colors too.

You haven't seen the last of Fandangle around here because, I'll be making another version of the Modern Plus Sampler from Fandangle, compliments of Benartex.

Blogger Bundle with Needle & Foot Fine Fabrics and Giveaway

I was thrilled when Bernie of Needle & Foot asked me to curate a bundle for her Etsy shop, Needle & Foot Fine Fabrics.  And, Bernie has generously allowed me to give away a bundle to one of you too!



I had so much fun curating a bundle.  This was a first for me, so I may have shopped 'til I dropped, so to speak, picking out just the right fabrics to represent summertime.

I picked out the following five prints, all Windham Fabrics, to include the June blogger bundle which are pictured above from top to bottom:
  • Dots in Yellow from Paint the Town by Striped Bear Studio (printed on GOTS certified cotton)
  • Dash in Pink from Dreamer by Carrie Bloomston 
  • Raindrops from Paint the Town by Striped Bear Studio (printed on GOTS certified cotton)
  • Grid Paper in Green from Wordplay by Sarah Fielke 
  • Frolic from Meriwether by Amy Gibson

I have started a baby quilt with a garden theme using all five prints on a white background.  The Dots in Yellow made the perfect sun and flower center.

I used a zigzag stitch, not quite a satin stitch, to applique the pieces in place. I cut out a quarter circle for the sun and some triangles for rays of sunshine.  Aurifil (50 wt.) 1135, Pale Yellow, matched perfectly.



A big daisy will be added using petals from Dash in pink.  I cut the petals using the Go! Orange Peel die.



The tulip was also designed using the orange peel die.  I cut the green flower stem on the bias for interest and, again, used the orange peel die to cut out the leaf. 


It can't always be sunshine and pretty flowers, sometimes there are rain clouds too.

Research Triangle ~ Curated Quilts Mini Triangle Challenge

I cut this one a little close by entering right at midnight on April 1st, the deadline to enter the Triangle Mini Quilt Challenge sponsored by Curated Quilts.  I was hand sewing down binding as fast as I could and took this photo at 11:39 pm.



I learned about the triangle challenge by picking up a postcard in Curated Quilts' booth where I met sweet Amy Ellis in person.



The first challenge I encountered was not having fabrics with those colors.  In my stash, I had Cotton Couture in Spa and Pluto that matched, but that was it.  I was done with Pluto from making this quilt.

Using the Michael Miller Cotton Couture color card, I picked out Sun and Orchid that matched and ordered on line.



Now to come up with an idea.  I started with some rough sketches on graph paper.  And, I'm even thinking about quilting ideas at the same time. 


Nothing developed there so I turned to a 'triangle' search on the internet.  I kept seeing the same image over and over, an equilateral triangle in a square, and thought I could accomplish it in a day.


This illustration is by Jim Wilson, a mathematics professor from the University of Georgia.  When I emailed him to ask permission to use his illustration, turns out, his daughter, Mary Kerr, is an accomplished quilter and certified quilt appraiser.

When it came to piecing, I cut out the equilateral triangle from Cotton Couture Spa using this 60° degree ruler (affiliate link).  For the background pieces cut from Orchid, I used the same ruler cut out another triangle which I discarded.  This way, the triangle and background pieces were all on grain.  I know, I'm crazy like that.

I'm also auditioning binding, a Michael Miller print, Candy Pointillism.


Because of all the bias edges, I pieced the triangle using my walking foot.  As a matter of fact, the entire quilt was pieced, quilted and bound using the walking foot, except for the hand sewing of the binding.


Now to quilt it.  That was another challenge.  I decided on simple walking foot quilting.  Well, the quilting was simple but the marking took some careful measuring to insure the lines would cross precisely.

Aurifil 2588 Light Magenta matched the Cotton Couture Orchid perfectly.  And, if you look closely you can see where I have marked some lines with the a hera maker.


For the most part, the intersections aligned.


I used Cotton Couture in Sun for the binding and despite my best efforts, I ended up with two joins within two inches of each other.  And, no surprise, it's a bias binding.


As small as this quilt is, 12" x 12", I still had to piece the backing.  I was using up fabric from another challenge, the Michael Miller Spring Cotton Couture challenge.  Members of the MQG can read all about After Dinner Mints here.


Here, I'm about to unsew part of the binding so I can tuck the label inside the binding.



Keeping with the triangle theme, I made the label into a triangle which I quickly added before shipping Research Triangle off to Curated Quilts.  I'm excited it will appear in the mini quilt gallery of Issue 04.

The Research Triangle Park in neighboring, North Carolina, inspired the name of my quilt because I certainly did a little research on triangles to make this mini.

Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop ➕ It's a Wrap ➕ Thank You

I can't believe the Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop is coming to a close!  It's been such a fun two weeks sharing the quilts from the book.  This stack of quilts represents almost 3 years of work between us.  Well, there are few missing, but that's still a lot of quilts.

  As many of you know, new authors are not given an advance on royalties so it was greatly appreciated to receive beautiful fabrics and supplies for all of the projects.  It was such a joy to 'shop' for fabric and supplies and have it land on your doorstep.

And, they even put my favorite color in the inside front cover with more little plus signs.


And last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank Cheryl (Meadow Mist Designs) for inviting me to join her on the incredible book-writing adventure.  She's all smiles here because it's shipping day.  We shipped off all the quilts to C&T for photography.  This was taken on February 13, 2017.
