Blocking and Binding: July One Monthly Goal

Now that this version of the Modern Plus Sampler has been professionally quilted by Johellen, it's time to finally finish it.  You can see the quilt fresh off her frame here in this post.

Modern Plus Sampler in Fandangle
I have been procrastinating because I'm a little nervous about blocking the quilt since I don't have much experience using wool batting.  Before I block it, I plan to trim the edges, leaving about one inch all the way around.

I had so much fun using Christa Watson's fabric line, Fandangle, which was generously provided by Benartex.  I've decided to bind it in the green colorway of Paper Cuts which I found at a local quilt shop, Viking Sew'n Quilt.

The quilting for the most of the background was inspired by the Paper Cuts fabric design.  Johellen quilted several quilts for our book, Modern Plus Sign Quilts, (affiliate link) co-authored with Cheryl Brickey of Meadow Mist Designs

I hope to report back at the end of the month with a freshly bound Modern Plus Sampler.  And, it needs a title and label too.  Any ideas on a title?

You can see the July One Monthly Goals of others over at Elm Street Quilts hosted by Patty!  Good luck with you July goals.

Modern Plus Sampler ➕ Rick Rack Blocks in Fandangle

I finished my Rick Rack Blocks for the Modern Plus Sampler just in time before the next set of instructions will be posted this Thursday, December 6th.  Most of my November was consumed with making two quilts to enter into QuiltCon 2019.  (More about those later.)

I'm using Christa Watson's fabric line, Fandangle, for this version of the Modern Plus Sampler.  Included are two colors of Confetti Crosshatch and Triangle Trinkets in teal.

And a couple of close ups...

You can find a link to the Rick Rack instructions here in this post and see the original Rick Rack Runner quilt here.

The next set of instructions will be posted Thursday, December 6th.  In the mean time, check out progress on Instagram at #ModernPlusSampler and check out Cheryl's Rick Rack area here.

Modern Plus Sampler ➕ Tribal Rows in Fandangle

I'm excited to have pieced and share my Tribal Rows from the Modern Plus Sampler with you!

As I shared before in this post, I'm making this version of the Modern Plus Sampler in Fandangle, Christa Watson's (Christa Quilts) latest fabric line from Benartex.

I first made all the plus signs and here they are...

And, a close up of one of the tribal rows...

Did you see where EQ made Fandangle available as a download this month? The link is here.  Here's what the a Tribal Rows sections look like rendered in Fandangle from EQ7.

Again, here is the original mock up of the Modern Plus Sampler in Fandangle that Cheryl rendered for me.  As you can see, I may decide to place the fabrics differently as we go along.

You can find the Modern Plus Sampler page here and the first piecing instructions, the Tribal Rows, here.  Sure hope you can sew along with Cheryl (Meadow Mist Designs) and me.

Modern Plus Sampler in Fandangle

The piecing of the Modern Plus Sampler is begins this week, Thursday, August 2nd!  Have you picked out your fabrics?

During the Modern Plus Sampler quilt along, I'm so excited to be piecing my version in Fandangle which is Christa Watson's (Christa Quilts) latest fabric line provided by Benartex.

This is the Modern Plus Sampler rendered in the cool blues and greens of Fandangle.

The fabrics and corresponding letters are as follows:

Fabric A - Confetti Crosshatch in Light Grey
Fabric B - Baubles & Bits in Teal

Fabric C - Paper Cuts in Green

Fabric D - Beaded Curtain in Turquoise and White

Fabric E - Triangle Trinkets in Teal

Backing Fabic - Sparkling Squares in Teal/Multi

Here are the Fandangle prints in cool colorway I shared as part of the Fandangle blog hop which took place a couple of weeks ago.

I made a mini Cute as a Button for the Fandangle blog hop and you can read all about the mini here and find links to see the other fabulous projects made with Fandangle.

Fandangle will be shipping to quilt shops any day now.  In the mean time, Christa has a limited selection of prints and kits in her shop.

You can see Cheryl's (Meadow Mist Designs) fabrics here. She'll be using all Hoffman Indah Batiks and Solids from You+Me.

I'm looking forward to sewing with Fandangle over the next months.  What fabrics will you be using for the Modern Plus Sampler?  See you on Thursday, August 2nd for the 1st set of instructions.

Fandangle Fabric Blog Hop ➕ Giveaway

I was so honored when Christa Watson of Christa Quilts asked me to take part in the blog hop for her latest fabric line, Fandangle, from Benartex and Contempo Studio.

How could you not love lime green paired with turquoise and teal.  I thought the Beaded Curtain low volume white and aqua would be the perfect background for Crosshatch Crosshatch in teal.

Since I love machine applique, I decided to use the Cute as a Button applique pattern from Modern Plus Sign Quilts and made a mini quilt to hang in my sewing room.  And so you'll know, Aurifil 4182 in dark turquoise matched the Confetti Crosshatch in teal perfectly.

Beaded Curtain is one of my favorites from Christa's Fandangle fabric.

I'm also very fond of the Confetti Crosshatch.  Pictured here is the teal used in the Cute as a Button applique and light grey Confetti Crosshatch, but it also comes in a dark gray.

The fun triangle prints are Triangle Trinkets and are pictured here with the Confetti Crosshatch.

You can see the scale of the print compared to the large spool of Aurifil.

I used the same Confetti Crosshatch in teal for the bias binding and the Triangle Trinkets in teal as the backing.

For the quilting, I attempted something similar to what Christa calls a 'jagged stipple'.  See her Fandangle introductory post with mention of jagged stipple.

I outlined the applique by quilting close to the applique on inside of the plus signs and around the outside of the circles.

Speaking of jagged stipple, the Paper Cuts print was inspired from Christa's jagged stipple quilting.  And here also is the main print, Baubles and Bits.  I just love the mid-century modern vibe going on in this print.

How fun to see Christ's name in print on the selvage of the the Baubles and Bits.

Continuing the theme of the main print is Sparkling Squares.

And, here are a couple more photos of the mini I'm calling Fandangle Button Plus.

Fandangle Button Plus looks a little lost on the large brick wall.

I've only showed you the cool colorway, but Fandangle also comes in warm colors too.

Here are all the prints together taken from the Benartex lookbook.

You haven't seen the last of Fandangle around here because, I'll be making another version of the Modern Plus Sampler from Fandangle, compliments of Benartex.

The Modern Plus Sampler Quilt Along is free and is just getting started so it's the perfect time to join in on the fun.  The first set of sewing instructions will be given out on August 2nd.  You'll need the book, Modern Plus Sign Quilts, to sew along.  You'll find a link here on where to purchase.  The fabric requirements are here
