Blocking and Binding: July One Monthly Goal

Now that this version of the Modern Plus Sampler has been professionally quilted by Johellen, it's time to finally finish it.  You can see the quilt fresh off her frame here in this post.

Modern Plus Sampler in Fandangle
I have been procrastinating because I'm a little nervous about blocking the quilt since I don't have much experience using wool batting.  Before I block it, I plan to trim the edges, leaving about one inch all the way around.

I had so much fun using Christa Watson's fabric line, Fandangle, which was generously provided by Benartex.  I've decided to bind it in the green colorway of Paper Cuts which I found at a local quilt shop, Viking Sew'n Quilt.

The quilting for the most of the background was inspired by the Paper Cuts fabric design.  Johellen quilted several quilts for our book, Modern Plus Sign Quilts, (affiliate link) co-authored with Cheryl Brickey of Meadow Mist Designs

I hope to report back at the end of the month with a freshly bound Modern Plus Sampler.  And, it needs a title and label too.  Any ideas on a title?

You can see the July One Monthly Goals of others over at Elm Street Quilts hosted by Patty!  Good luck with you July goals.

ASSEMBLE THE QUILT TOP

Sew the sections together to make the plus sign sampler quilt top, 63" x 78".

FINISHING

1 Make backing:  Remove selvages from backing fabric (4 ⅞ yards), cut into 2 pieces (approx. 87" x WOF) and sew backing pieces together along the trimmed selvage edges using a ½” seam, pressing the seam open.  Trim backing to approx. 72" x 87".

2 Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing.  Baste and quilt as desired.

Modern Plus Sampler ➕ Paper Pieced Blocks

I did it!  I actually completed the pieced blocks from the Modern Plus Sampler myself.  I was tempted to ask Cheryl to do them for me but in the end I'm glad I did them.

With larger and fewer pieces, I tackled the kaleidoscope block from Kaleidoscope Plus first.  I did add one element of complexity when piecing the block.  Since I was using a directional background fabric, Beaded Curtain from Fandangle by Christa Watson, I wanted to keep the beads all vertical.

Faceted Rings made me a little nervous with the odd angles and smaller pieces but I managed to complete it as well.

You will find January's instructions for the paper pieced areas in this post and all the details about the quilt-a-long on the Modern Plus Sampler pageYou can take a look at Cheryl's perfect paper pieced areas here.

Would you be interested in a tutorial on how I cut the directional fabric pieces for paper piecing?  Let me know in the comments.

Join us back on Thursday, February 7th, when we will share the final assembly instructions for the Modern Plus Sampler.  How exciting!

Modern Plus Sampler ➕ Applique in Fandangle

Well, 2018 is winding down fast and 2019 is almost here.  I wanted to show you the two applique blocks made from December's instructions from in the Modern Plus Sampler.

First up is the Petal Plus which is made from orange peels.  This block was appliqued in no time at all with only one start and stop.

Below is a detail shot of the Petal Plus.  You can see the original Petal Plus quilt here on day 6 of the Modern Plus Sign Quilts blog hop.

Next up is Cute as a Button.  This one took a little more time with out the inside and outside corners.  The original Cute as a Button quilt is here on day 7 of the Modern Plus Sign Quilt blog hop.

I'm using Chista Watson's Fandangle fabric line for this version of the Modern Plus Sampler.  You can see more details of Cute as a Button as I am using the same fabric I used in the mini quilt I made for the Fandangle blog hop back in July.

The next set of instructions will be posted Thursday, January 3rd.  In the mean time, check out progress on Instagram at #ModernPlusSampler and check out Cheryl's applique blocks here.
